Abstract

The Wachowski brothers' 1999 film The Matrix revolutionized the world of cinema both visually and philosophically. The film attracts attention not only with its action scenes and special effects, but also with its in-depth philosophical and cultural references that contribute to the understanding of intertextuality. Intertextuality is a literary and cultural phenomenon in which a work gains meaning by referring to another work, text or cultural source. By referring to many texts from different genres and periods, The Matrix film offers viewers a richer world of meaning. Studies on intertextuality theory, cyberpunk literature, mythological and philosophical concepts are examined and their relationship with the text is discussed. The extent to which ideas such as Plato's Cave, Descartes' skepticism, Baudrillard's simulation theory are reflected in the film has been determined. In addition, the intertextual relations between The Matrix and other science fiction works (Neuromancer, Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, etc.) were revealed. Through these methods, it has been shown that The Matrix goes beyond being a science fiction film and has a complex narrative structure fed by different disciplines.

Ayrıca The Matrix ile diğer bilim kurgu yapıtlarının (Neuromancer, Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell vb.) metinlerarası ilişkileri ortaya konulmuştur. Bu yöntemler sayesinde The Matrix’in bir bilim kurgu filmi olmaktan öteye geçerek farklı disiplinlerden beslenen kompleks bir anlatı yapısına sahip olduğu gösterilmiştir.
