Abstract

This study reviews social psychological studies of the contents of national identities in terms of boundary definitions (e.g., civic, cultural, ethnic), underlying motivations (e.g., self-esteem, continuity, distinctiveness), nationalistic attitudes (nationalism and patriotism), and intergroup relations and perceptions of threat. Based on this review, it aims to define the contents of Turkish identity. To this end, 64 university students from big cities in Turkey answered 8-openended questions about the Turkish identity. The open-ended answers were then analyzed via thematic analysis. Results suggested that the contents of Turkish identity could be defined in terms of In-group Boundaries, Motivations of Having a Turkish Identity, Intergroup Relations with Others and Perceptions of Threat, and Stereotypes Concerning Turkish Identity. In light of the results, a descriptive framework is proposed for the contents of Turkish identity
