Abstract

This study examined attitudes toward Syrian refugees in Turkey with respect to the definitions of national identity boundaries. Attitudes toward Syrian refugees were considered in terms of in-group favoritism, social distance, and perceived threat. The role of perceived threat as a mediator variable was also examined. 157 university students participated in the study. They completed the measures of definitions of Turkish identity boundaries, social distance, perception of threat, 2-items of in-and out-group evaluation, and in-group identification. Hierarchal regression analyses showed that as one of the definitions of the Turkish identity boundaries, national participation (including relatively achievable criteria) predicted all of the dependent variables (i.e., in-group favoritism, social distance, and perceived threat). The other one, national essentialism (including relatively unachievable criteria) predicted only social distance. Perception of threat emerged as a significant mediator variable in the relationship of national participation with in-group favoritism and social distance. Results were discussed in the light of the relevant literature and regarding the context of the study.
