Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine science teacher candidates’ awareness of green chemistry and sustainability and their attitudes toward environmental education, and to examine whether these variables differ by gender and grade level. The research was conducted using a quantitative survey design. The study group consists of 137 pre-service science teachers studying in the science education programs of three state universities during the spring semester of the 2024-2025 academic year. Data were collected through a 34-item five-point Likert scale titled “Green Chemistry Awareness, Sustainability Awareness, and Attitudes Toward Environment and Environmental Education.” Descriptive and inferential statistics analyses were conducted. The findings showed that participants had above-moderate awareness of green chemistry (M = 3.53), while their sustainability awareness (M = 4.33) and attitudes toward environmental education (M = 4.12) were high. No statistically significant differences were found by gender in any of the three variables (p > .05). However, green chemistry awareness was significantly higher among fourth-year teacher candidates (p .05).The results indicate that teacher candidates have a strong orientation toward environmental and sustainability-related issues, yet green chemistry awareness still needs to be supported more systematically and through practice-based components in teacher education programs.
