Abstract

In the 13th century, as the Crusades continued in the Eastern Islamic lands and the Reconquista was underway on the Iberian Peninsula, important Islamic cities such as Córdoba, Seville, and Murcia were being conquered by Christian kingdoms, while Muslims began living in large numbers under Christian rule in these cities, known as “Mudéjar.” As contacts between Al-Andalus and Christian Spain intensified, some Christians in the region not only came to know Muslim culture more closely but also undertook significant theological studies of their religion. This article aims to determine Pedro Pascual’s (d. 1300) contacts with Muslims and his views on the Islamic religion and Muslims through the works he authored in Castilian and Catalan, as he was one of the prominent clergymen who flourished in the Iberian Peninsula in the 13th century. In this context, the portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad in the works Disputa del Bisbe de Jaen and Sobre la Seta Mahometana by Pedro Pascual, who was taken captive by Muslims in 1298 and taken to Granada, the capital of the Kingdom of the Banu Ahmar, where he resided until his death, and the fundamental principles of the Islamic religion and records regarding Muslims have been examined to determine the author’s conception of Islam. Similarly, by examining Pedro Pascual’s observations on Muslim-Christian relations during his years of captivity in Granada, this study will explore the nature of interfaith interactions on the Iberian Peninsula from the perspective of a clergyman living in the region during the 13th century. In this study, analysis, criticism, and synthesis based on primary sources were applied in accordance with historical research methods.
