Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the most suitable LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technologies that can be used in intelligent transportation systems, which are a critical component of smart cities. Especially in large-scale and critical infrastructure systems such as rail transportation, the correct selection and application of these technologies directly affects the effectiveness of intelligent transportation. LPWAN technologies, which will be implemented within the scope of intelligent transportation, primarily aim to improve traffic safety, accelerate information flow, increase transportation efficiency and ensure user satisfaction. In this study, LPWAN technologies such as LoRa, Sigfox, NB-IoT, Nwave, DASH7, Qowiso, and LTE-M, which stand out due to their advantages such as low energy consumption and wide coverage area, were examined in the context of cities being reshaped in line with sustainability and technological developments. During the analysis process, the weights of criteria were determined using the Entropy method from multi-criteria decision-making methods, and then the RAM and CURLI-2 ranking methods were used to compare and analyze the importance levels of the technologies in question according to the determined criteria within the scope of the study. The research results show that both the CURLI-2 and RAM analyses provide consistent and comparative findings on which LPWAN technologies should be preferred in intelligent transportation systems, demonstrating that the methods produce valid results. In conclusion, the study provides an important contribution to decision makers in terms of strategic planning by prioritizing LPWAN technologies that optimize resource use and improve quality of life in intelligent transportation systems. In the long term, increasing investments in such technologies in urban planning would be a more rational approach in terms of sustainable urbanization goals.
