Abstract

This study focuses on the experiences of news verification platforms regarding the verification processes based on Plato's Allegory of the Cave. Just as the prisoners in Plato's Allegory of the Cave, who have never experienced any place other than the cave since birth, think that reality consists of the voices in the cave and the silhouettes reflected on the wall, in today's postmodern age, individuals perceive fake content produced in new media environments as truth. The practices of news verification platforms in combating fake news created and mediated in new media environments resemble the efforts of the prisoner who escaped from Plato's cave and experienced the truth to tell the truth to other prisoners. In this qualitative study, https://www.dogrula.org, https://www.dogrulukpayi.com and https://teyit.org platforms were selected as the research object. In the study, semi-structured interview technique was adopted as the data collection method. In the light of the data obtained, it was concluded that the belief and ideology of the audience is determinative in the way they perceive even in the news that are verified.
