Abstract

Wood is a three-dimensional, polymeric, and biodegradable material composed primarily of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin as its main structural constituents. Consequently, when exposed to outdoor conditions, wood deteriorates due to abiotic and biotic factors. Among biotic agents, fungi and insects play a significant role in wood degradation by breaking down wood components into simpler constituents. As a result, the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of wood are altered, reducing its service life. In this study, water absorption behavior and compression strength parallel to the grain of wood exposed to various biotic factors in natural environments (blue stain, spalting, white-rot and brown-rot fungi, and insect attacks) were investigated. For this purpose, wood samples subjected to the specified deterioration types were cut into dimensions of 2 × 2 × 3 cm and divided into two groups. After determining oven-dry weights, specimens in the first group were immersed in water for a total of 264 hours. During this period, samples were removed from water at predetermined intervals, and water absorption rates and volumetric swelling coefficients were calculated. For the second group, compression strength parallel to the grain was determined. The results revealed that brown-rot fungi rapidly degraded hemicellulose and cellulose, transforming wood into a brittle, cracked structure, resulting in extreme water absorption of up to 360% and the highest volumetric swelling (20.7%). In contrast, insect damage produced the lowest swelling values due to the “volumetric buffer” effect of galleries, while structural voids reduced compression strength to critical levels (12 N/mm²). Blue-stain fungi largely preserved structural integrity and strength, whereas white-rot fungi gradually weakened physical properties by more balanced degradation of lignin and carbohydrates. Overall, brown rot and insect attack were identified as the biotic factors that most severely compromise both dimensional stability and compression strength parallel to grain.
