Abstract
Following the death of Fatih Sultan Mehmed, his elder son Bayezid and his younger son Cem had started a struggle for the throne. While Bayezid, who emerged victorious from this struggle, ascended to the throne, Cem Sultan first took refuge with the Mamluks and then with the Knights of Rhodes and fell into the position of a prisoner. Çiçek Hatun, who acted together with her son during this process, defected to the Mamluks with him and settled in Cairo, where she lost her life. Throughout the process from the moment when Cem began his struggle for the reign until his death in Europe, Çiçek Hatun did not break off her connection with her son, she continued to communicate with him through letters. As far as is known, two of these letters have survived to the present day. There are debates about whether the first of these letters in the Ottoman Archives belongs to Çiçek Hatun. However, another letter we found in the archive, numbered TSMA.e 748/15, is of nature to put an end to these debates. As a matter of fact, the similarities between the two letters in terms of writing style, wording and content strengthen the claim that this letter belongs to Çiçek Hatun. Based on this, the study analyzes the content of two letters sent to Cem Sultan by his mother. The first of these is from the period when Cem fought with his brother as a rebel prince in Anatolia; the second is from the years of captivity in Europe. By examining these two letters from two different periods in Cem’s life, it is possible to find clues about Çiçek Hatun’s world of faith and feelings. In our study, the letters in which Çiçek Hatun’s longing, worries and concerns are conveyed in an emotional language as a mother worried about Cem’s life are read and analyzed in a historical context.
Özet
Fatih Sultan Mehmed’in vefatının ardından büyük oğlu Bayezid ile küçük oğlu Cem taht mücadelesine girişmişti. Bu mücadeleden galip çıkan Bayezid tahta otururken; Cem Sultan önce Memlükler’e, ardından Rodos Şövalyeleri’ne sığınarak esir konumuna düşmüştü. Bu süreçte oğluyla beraber hareket eden Çiçek Hatun da onunla birlikte Memlükler’e iltica ederek Kahire’ye yerleşmiş ve orada hayatını kaybetmişti. Cem’in saltanat mücadelesine giriştiği andan Avrupa’daki vefatına kadar geçen süreçte, Çiçek Hatun oğluyla bağını koparmamış, onunla mektuplar üzerinden iletişimini devam ettirmiştir.
