Abstract
Turks and Mongols have many similar characteristics such as being nomadic, establishing great states, having the belief in the God of Sky before Islam, and being austere. One of these common characteristics is their belief in astro-logy and astrologers. In the past, both Turks and Mongols gave place to a number of astrologers as well as scientists in their palaces or administrations. Likewise, the high-ranking rulers and the people of the state also occasionally consulted the opinions of the astrologers on some issues. In fact, there was even an institution called the chief astologers in the Ottoman Empire. They generally benefited from the astrologers in terms of determining the fa-vorable day for such matters as expeditions, ascension to the throne, construction of public or private buildings, and pilgrimages. Apart from that, the views of astrologers were taken into consideration and taken into account in many other matters such as making inferences about the future of born princes, interpreting dreams, and taking precautions against natural events such as possible earthquakes. One of the fields of study of folklore is folk beliefs. As a belief, just as one hopes for help from the tombs and performs various rituals in this direction, in the same way, the opinions, predictions and prophecies of the astrologers were also taken into consideration; they were often believed. In this context, it can be said that the subject we are dealing with is in a way a faith-based issue. In conclusion, Turkish and Mongolian rulers generally believed in the opinions of the astrologers and took the necessary steps in line with their views. The accuracy or inaccuracy of the opinions of the astrologers are kept outside of the scope of this study. What constitutes the main focus of this study are the beliefs of the rulers of the two nations towards the astrologers in the historical process, which we take as a basis for the study through examples.
