Abstract
Amasya city, which has a very ancient history, is a historical city that stands out with its social, economic and cultural aspects. Amasya, which was also the provincial center during the years it joined the Ottoman Empire, preserved its status as one of the important sanjaks of the Ottoman Empire until the collapse of the state. In this study, the district of Gümüş, which has a deep-rooted and important history like Amasya, will be mentioned. Today, the district affiliated with Amasya and named Gümüşhacıköy was called Gümüş Kazası during the Ottoman period. During the period under review and in archival documents, the name of the district sometimes appears as simply Gümüş, sometimes as Gümüşâbâd, and sometimes as Gümüş ma‘a Hacıköyü. In the study, the first 12 registers from the Sivas Ahkam-ı Şikâyet registers belonging to the province of Sivas, to which the district of Gümüş also belongs, were scanned. The first register starts with the date 1742. The last register examined is the Sivas Ahkâm-ı Şikâyet Registers number 12 and it ends in 1774. A total of 236 provisions related to Gümüş were identified from these registers. Based on the complaints, attempts were made to interpret the socio-economic life in the district of Gümüş. During that period, the names of the neighborhoods, townships and villages of Gümüş district were determined and included in the study. The complaints include personal issues such as inheritance, debt, and buying and selling faced by the people living in the district of Gümüş and its surrounding settlements, as well as complaints concerning the general public, such as taxation and security issues in the region. Various information about the foundations in the district of Gümüş in the 18th century is also provided.
