Abstract

Political advertising is a form of political communication used by candidates running for office to introduce themselves and their policies to voters and promote themselves. This type of advertising aims to influence voters' voting behaviour. The narrative texts used by candidates in their advertisements to reach voters and the meanings they convey are worthy of academic study. While Türkiye has experienced many election processes, local elections have made the use of such advertisements important for political actors. In particular, there is limited research on the meaning behind the language and visuals used by candidates in local elections. The main objective of the study is to add to these limited studies by analysing the advertising film Biz İzmir’iz Başarabiliriz, which was made for Hamza Dağ, a candidate in the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality elections, as part of the political competition that has been going on for years. The data obtained within the scope of the research is collected and analysed by dividing the advertising film into sequences and based on the principle of contrast. The findings obtained as a result of the analysis reveal several different aspects of the visual language and narrative structure used in Dağ's advertising film. In this context, it is concluded that the political group represented by Dağ as a candidate has a structure that differs from traditional values, is distant from the cultural structure of the regional electorate despite being a local election, is weak in establishing a connection with the electorate, and that this weakness affects the vote count, and that the campaign is conducted independently of the institutional identity of the party he represents as a candidate.
