Abstract
The concepts of need and consumption have always been central and indispensable elements of human life. However, the perception of consumption has changed significantly throughout history. While the concept of consumption initially served to meet basic needs, it has taken on a different identity in modern societies as a result of the attribution of personal desires, social identities and symbolic meanings. The study examines the relationship between the Diderot effect and ostentatious consumption and analyses whether income has a moderating role in this relationship. Data obtained from 243 consumers are analyzed using SPSS 21 and Hayes Process statistical analysis software. The findings show that there is a significant positive relationship between the Diderot effect and conspicuous consumption. However, the fact that income does not show a moderating effect suggests that psychological and social factors may play a more important role than financial resources. The study provides valuable insights into consumer behavior and in this context, further research is needed that takes into account variables such as cultural influences, financial literacy and social comparison processes.
