Abstract

The aim of the study is to examine the predictive role of distrust in the health system on individuals’ healthcare demand procrastination behavior. The research is designed as a quantitative study using the relational screening model, cross-sectional and conducted with 406 participants residing in İstanbul, Türkiye. Data are collected online using the Health Care System Distrust Scale and the Healthcare Demand Procrastination Scale. Findings reveal that distrust in the health system significantly predicts healthcare demand procrastination (β = .260; p < .001). The model is significant (F = 32.872; p < .001), and distrust explains 7.3% of the variance in procrastination behavior. In the multiple regression analysis, where demographic variables are controlled, the explanatory power of the model increases to 14.1% (R² = .141), and the significant predictive effect of distrust on procrastination behavior remains (β = .241; p < .001). Additionally, healthcare demand procrastination differs significantly according to age, marital status, education, income, and chronic illness. In conclusion, distrust in the health system negatively affects individuals’ healthcare-seeking behavior; however, this behavior is also influenced by economic, cultural, psychological, and accessibility-related factors.
