Abstract
The study examines the inflation and disinflation processes in the Turkish economy during 2006Q1:2024Q4 period through the lens of consumption dynamics and the monetary transmission channels affecting demand. In the study, the average consumption trend is used as the consumption dynamic, and treasury bill rates and central bank policy rates are used as market interest rates for the monetary transmission channels affecting demand. The existence and direction of long-term relationships between the average consumption trend, market interest rates, policy interest rates, and inflation are examined using the Johansen cointegration test and alternative cointegration tests (FMOLS, DOLS, CCR). Short-term, long-term, and asymmetric effects of inflation dynamics during the inflation and disinflation processes are analyzed using structural VAR (SVAR) and NARDL methods. According to the empirical findings obtained from the structural VAR method, average consumption trends and market interest rates have positive effects on inflation, while the policy interest rate has a negative effect. In line with the study’s motivation, during the 2022Q4–2024Q4 period defined as the disinflation process, the consumption trend is identified as the primary driver of inflation. In the NARDL model, where the asymmetric effects of the disinflation process are disentangled, increases in the consumption trend emerge as a dynamic that not only serves as the primary trigger for inflation but also leads to inertia through the inflation expectations channel. In the context where the inflation expectations channel is valid, the symmetric relationships between inflation and interest rates serve as significant evidence. Based on these findings, the success of the disinflation process depends not only on monetary tightening but also on the central bank’s resolve, breaking the inertia in inflation expectations, and bringing consumption trends under control.
