Abstract

The design improvement and field test studies carried out to reduce the roll tendency under lateral acceleration of an apron bus to be used for passenger transport at airport fields are summarised. Firstly, the target roll characteristic was determined as a result of the tests applied to the selected reference vehicle. In the second stage, test data which portray the roll behaviour of the prototype vehicle were collected. A validated Adams/Car™-based Multibody Systems (MBS) model bus was built by using these data. As a result of the analysis carried out with this model, the design alterations that should be made in the front suspensions of the vehicle were determined in order to improve the roll tendency. Among these, it has been seen that installing anti-roll bar (ARB) on the front axle of the vehicle is a more suitable solution. Field tests have shown that the chosen solution can reduce the roll tendency of the prototype vehicle by 42% compared to the initial design.
