Abstract

This study critically examines how nineteenth-century Western travel literature represented the Ottoman world through the example of Charles Macfarlane. Centered on Muhittin Doğan’s work Batı Seyahat Edebiyatı ve Charles Macfarlane’in Gözünden Osmanlı Dünyası (Western Travel Literature and the Ottoman World through the Eyes of Charles Macfarlane), this evaluation approaches travel writings not merely as descriptive texts but as a field of representation that reproduces the West’s ideological and Orientalist discourses. Macfarlane’s observations of the Ottoman geography are analyzed in terms of administrative structures, social life, reform initiatives, and the multicultural composition of the empire, revealing that these narratives construct a discourse of decline closely linked to Britain’s political interests. The study emphasizes that while portraying the Ottoman Empire as a polity in need of reforms, backward, and lacking an internal capacity for transformation, the traveler constructs a mindset that legitimizes Western intervention; thus demonstrating that Western travel literature constitutes an ideological discursive field deeply intertwined with power relations.
