Abstract

Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious viral pathogen characterized by severe gastrointestinal disease, immunosuppression, and high mortality, particularly in puppies. This study aims to compare hematological, biochemical, and acute phase protein (APP) responses between dogs infected with CPV and a healthy control group, and to evaluate the prognostic significance of selected biomarkers. The study included a total of 40 dogs aged 0–12 months; the study group (n=30) comprised dogs confirmed CPV-positive via fecal antigen rapid test kits, while the control group (n=10) consisted of dogs assessed as clinically and hematologically healthy with negative rapid test results. Our findings demonstrate that hematological parameters especially serum Haptoglobin (HP) levels are significant biomarkers for assessing the severity of systemic inflammation and predicting survival in CPV infection. Consequently, incorporating APP monitoring specifically HP and C-reactive protein (CRP) into routine protocols, alongside hemogram and albumin tracking, is crucial for early prognostic assessment, enhancing clinical decision-making, and preventing disease spread through the rapid detection of subclinical cases.
