Abstract
This study reports the rediscovery of Tulipa sprengeri Baker (yitik lâle) a species endemic to Türkiye that was previously known only from its type collection and had long been regarded as extinct in the wild. The species was first collected in Amasya in 1892 and formally described by Baker in 1894. A second collection was made in 1896, under the name Tulipa brachyanthera Freyn, after which no further records were documented for more than a century. In 2026, the species was rediscovered in Amasya by the authors with the valuable contribution of citizen scientists. Examination of Baker's original collection notes and type specimens demonstrated that the rediscovered population is consistent with the original description and the type locality. Furthermore, detailed field investigations confirmed that the population is naturally occurring. The rediscovered population of yitik lâle (T. sprengeri) has an extremely restricted distribution, with its only known extant population occupying an area of less than 0.2 km² and consisting of fewer than 1,000 individuals. Based on observations of the natural population and newly collected herbarium specimens, an updated morphological description of the species is provided and compared with previous taxonomic treatments.
