Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the development of tourism in Turkey through a long-running travel and promotional television program. In this context, the Gezelim Görelim program, which began airing in 1984 by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), has been examined. The program, which focuses on the natural beauty, social structure, culture, history, and traditions of Anatolia, was analyzed through selected episodes available online using purposive sampling. Written texts derived from these episodes were subjected to content analysis. The research reveals that the program played a pioneering role in the development of tourism, frequently included concepts related to different types of tourism, and featured local people in a sincere and authentic manner. While highlighting the impact of television broadcasting on tourism, the study also theoretically addresses the function of television not only as a mass communication medium but also as a tool that constructs and transmits cultural memory. In conclusion, the study analyzes how Turkey’s cultural heritage is represented through the Gezelim Görelim program and demonstrates that television broadcasting functions not merely as a promotional tool but also as a powerful medium of cultural memory that conveys and preserves heritage.
