Abstract

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the patient demographics, features of injuries and treatments of the patients admitted to 3rd step healthcare units with firearm-related extremity injuries in Bursa. In this study, we examined the files of the patients admitted to Emergency Departments of Uludag University Medical Faculty Hospital and Bursa Yüksek Ihtisas Education and Research Hospital because of firearm-related extremity injuries, in the period from 2000 to 2006. Of the 108 patients 11 (10.2%) were women and 97 (89.8%) were men, the age range of the patients were 12-69 years (mean 33.4±11.7 years). Injuries had occurred at least on Friday and occurred most frequently at the weekend. Comparison between the months, injuries had occurred most frequently in September and October however occurred at least in February. Most of the patients (79.6%) injured with handguns. Left leg (53.7%) and right leg (44.4%) were injured more often. Of the pa-tients 60.2% fractures were determined. 38 patients (35.2%) treated surgically. Individual firearm-related injuries are a social problem today for our country. Such these studies will contribute to developing new strategies about preventing this social problem.
