Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of foreign direct investments (FDIs) on employment in 22 upper-middle-income countries. To achieve this objective, the period from 2000 to 2022 was analyzed using panel regression and the Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test methods. The results of the panel regression analysis indicate that FDIs have a negative effect on employment. Conversely, the Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test reveals a bidirectional causal relationship between FDIs and employment. Foreign direct investment and employment phenomena can significantly contribute to the transition of upper-middle-income countries into the high-income country group, as they influence factor productivity. In this context, this study examines the relationship between these phenomena using current data. It is anticipated that presenting the current situation of upper-middle-income countries and deriving policy implications will enhance the existing literature on the subject.
