Abstract
The Caucasus, which has changed hands between many powers throughout history due to its geographical location, became one of the target points in the colonial race between Russia and England in the first half of the 19th century. A bloc was formed, led by England, which closely followed Russia's progress in Ottoman lands in line with its policy of increasing its dominance over the Straits and becoming the superior power in the Mediterranean. As a result, the Crimean War, which delayed the occupation of the Ottoman Empire, brought about the defenselessness of the peoples of Turkestan and the Caucasus during the Russian occupation. After the Crimean War, the allied states remained silent against Russia's occupations of the Caucasus and Turkestan. In this context, the Islamic thought movement called Muridism played a unifying role for the scattered Caucasian peoples who were out of the control of the Ottoman Empire. Many people, especially Sheikh Shamil, played important roles in this movement, which was quite successful in providing organized resistance against Russian occupations. However, no permanent success was achieved against the Russian troops, which were superior in number and ammunition. The study examines the reflections of the geopolitical and geostrategic competition between England and Russia in the first half of the 19th century on the North Caucasus. England's policy in the process leading to the occupation of the Caucasus by Russia and the struggle of the Caucasian peoples against the Russian occupations are tried to be revealed in the light of British archival documents, parliamentary records and diplomatic correspondence of the period. While emphasizing the strategic importance of the Caucasus in the context of international politics, the effect of the competition in line with the interests of the great powers on the fate of the peoples of the region is discussed.
