Abstract

The concept of negative capability, introduced by John Keats, refers to an individual's ability to resist the urge to act in the face of uncertainties and mysteries, instead remaining calm and creating a mental space for understanding the situation. This fosters a deeper understanding of the situation. This capability ena-bles individuals to embrace ambiguity and complexity, fostering a more profound comprehension rather than resorting to hasty reactions. This study aims to develop a scale for measuring the concept of negative capability within the context of leadership and to examine its relationship with leaders' subjective well-being. The scale development process began with the creation of an item pool using both deductive and inductive approaches, followed by validity and reliability analyses conducted on two separate samples. In the first phase, the construct validity of the scale was tested with the participation of 386 managers, to investigating its underlying factor structure. In the subsequent phase, analyses conducted with 321 man-agers tested the structure from a confirmatory perspective, and the scale’s validity and reliability were evaluated. The research findings have confirmed the validity and reliability of the Negative Capability Scale, consisting of 6 dimensions and 36 items. The dimensions of the scale are identified as strong self-perception, tolerance for uncertainty, emotional resilience, openness to experience, proactive inaction and critical thinking. The absence of any existing scale addressing the concept of negative capability in the context of leadership in the literature underscores the significance of this study. The developed Negative Capability Scale contributes to the literature by providing an objective means to evaluate leaders' ability to cope with uncertainty. Moreover, the scale may also serve to enhance these capabilities in leaders and improve organisational performance.
