Abstract

Situations such as the limited natural resources of the world, uncontrolled production and consumption, and the increase in gases released into the atmosphere cause global warming and climate changes. Environmental events and natural disasters are among the factors that directly affect architecture. Drawing on the film Snowpiercer (Bong Joon Ho, 2013), the study aims to analyze how a film centered on the global climate crisis can be constructed through form and narrative, what this construction conveys, and what meanings and ideologies it may represent as a social critique alongside a global crisis. In this context, a two-stage analysis was conducted. First, the creative process and principles of the film were identified using a neoformalism approach. Then, the film's message was examined from an anamorphic perspective. The study investigates the relationship between humans, society, and space through an interdisciplinary framework, informed by climate change. Anamorphosis is a representational method that questions the relationship between reality and seemingly real representations. In the film Snowpiercer, the definition of deterioration, preservation, and transformation over humanity, society, and space are discussed through the concepts of anamorphosis including deficiency, reflection-illusion, perspective, certainty-uncertainty, deformation, excessiveness and deviation. The neoformalist approach helps to analyze how the film is constructed through the relationship between form and narrative. In this context, the anamorphic concepts in the film are analyzed with a neoformalist approach, the climate crisis and how an artificial natural world affects human life and living spaces are questioned. The study demonstrates that the integrated transformation of space within changing living conditions is reshaped by the unchanging interaction between society, people, and space. As long as individual approaches to global crises and problems remain unchanged, social inequalities and different forms of crises will continue to exist.
