Abstract
The Industrial Revolution led to profound transformations in production systems and social structures, resulting in the emergence of the working class and the reconfiguration of labor relations. This transformation affected not only economic and social spheres but also the field of art, prompting artists to increasingly represent the lives and labor of the working class in their works. This study aims to examine the emergence and transformation of labor and working-class representations in painting after the Industrial Revolution within an art historical framework. Rather than being limited to Europe, the study considers selected examples from different geographical contexts, including the Soviet Union, the United States, and Latin America, in order to explore how labor has been reflected in painting. The artworks are analyzed through art historical interpretation and iconographic analysis, taking into account the historical and socio-economic contexts in which they were produced. The findings indicate that with the process of industrialization, representations of labor and the working class became increasingly visible in painting, and that these representations acquired different meanings depending on their social and ideological contexts. The examined works reveal that labor was sometimes depicted within narratives that glorified industrial production, while in other cases it functioned as a critical visual field that exposed social inequalities. The study also highlights that representations of women’s labor emerged as an important subject in painting in relation to modern production processes and broader social transformations.
