Abstract

The frequency, size, intensity and duration of heat waves have been increasing every year and the main reason for this is global climate change. Meteorological Service defines heat waves as "continuation of the highest temperature averages of 5°C or more with excessive humidity for at least 3 days." In humans, exposure to heat and humidity in amounts that exceed the compensatory mechanisms of the thermoregulatory system can lead to worsening of existing diseases, heat-related illnesses such as sunstroke/heat exhaustion/heat cramps, and death. As a result of the studies examined, it was observed that the frequency of heat waves and related heat-related illnesses, hospital admissions and deaths increased over the years. Age, comorbidities, and working conditions have been found to be associated with heat-related illnesses and deaths. In addition, there are studies that have determined the lack of knowledge, attitude and behavior regarding the risks of heat waves and hospital admissions and that informative intervention studies have been shown to be effective. In this review study, it is aimed to show the negative effects of heat waves on public health and the epidemiology of heat-related illnesses with examples from various studies and to offer suggestions to prevent these negative health consequences.
