Abstract

This cross-sectional study examined associations between trauma symptoms, eating behaviors, and health-related quality of life among adult earthquake survivors and evaluated whether body dissatisfaction and binge eating mediated relationships between trauma symptoms and physical and mental quality of life. The study was conducted online between January and May 2025 among 849 adults (442 women, 407 men) living in Malatya. Data were assessed using the Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms Scale, Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire-Short Form, and Short Form-12 Health Survey. Women had significantly higher trauma symptom scores than men (53.70±20.60 vs. 45.50±21.00; p<.001). Trauma symptoms were negatively associated with physical (r=–.169 to –.229; p<.001) and mental (r=–.236 to –.267; p<.001) quality of life. Body dissatisfaction showed the most consistent association with trauma symptoms (r=.262–.383; p<.001), while binge eating was most strongly associated with emotional problems (r=.247; p<.001). Regression analysis identified sex, food insecurity, physician-diagnosed health problems, and income lower than expenses as significant predictors of higher trauma symptoms (R²=.22; p<.001). Mediation analyses showed that body dissatisfaction and binge eating partially mediated the relationship between trauma symptoms and lower health-related quality of life.
