Abstract

Goli Taraqqi, one of the notable women writers of contemporary Iranian literature, offers in “The Pomegranate Lady and Her Sons” a narrative that lends itself well to a reading through the idea of liminal space. The liminal spaces the characters experience in the story are shaped by several themes, including place, time, identity, and cultural belonging. At the beginning of the story, the woman passenger (the first-person narrator) and the other characters are placed in a physical and psychological state of transition. The plot begins when the Pomegranate Lady arrives in Tehran, yet what follows is not only a description of a geographical journey. Instead, it reveals the in-between moments where questions of belonging, identity, and cultural attachment come to the surface. The Pomegranate Lady’s first time leaving her village, her inability to read or write, and her effort to reach her sons in Sweden create a liminal experience that is both concrete and symbolic. Because of this, the story explores not only the characters’ emotional shifts but also broader themes such as migration and cultural identity. It encourages the reader to think about issues like belonging, estrangement, and the search for a stable sense of self. In this study, “The Pomegranate Lady and Her Sons” will be examined in terms of the characters’ spatial, temporal, and psychological transitions. A close, text-based interpretive approach will be used to analyze how liminal spaces shape the narrative.
