Abstract

Bordered by the ancient regions of Lycaonia, Pamphylia, and Cilicia, the Isaurian region was the scene of numerous rebellions and banditry activities in Late Antiquity, which troubled Roman emperors and rulers for a long time due to its unfavorable structure in terms of economic activities. In addition, as the imperial forces concentrated on events in Isauria, rebellions against Roman rule occurred in the border provinces of the empire. Especially in the 4th and 5th centuries AD, banditry-related incidents affected not only Isauria but also developments in the imperial capital (Constantinopolis/İstanbul). It was during the suppression of events in Isauria and the fight against banditry that fortresses were built at strategic points in the region. These castles, often called phrourion or castellum, played an important role in the history of the region. The most important of such structures is the castellum Kherris/Papirios, the localization of which remains a matter of debate, but is described in detail in numerous ancient sources in relation to the events of 5th century AD Isauria. In this study, the localization problem of the Kherris/Papirios Castle will be discussed within the framework of the information provided by ancient sources and inscriptions and our observations in the field, and the role of the castle in the Isaurian events of the 5th century AD and the developments that took place in the capital will be emphasized.
