Abstract

This study aimed to develop a scale to assess adults’ stereotypes toward childhood sexual abuse disclosure. Using a cross-sectional quantitative psychometric design, the sample consisted of 503 individuals aged 18 years and older living in Türkiye. Of the participants, 61.2% identified as female, 36.8% as male, and 2% did not report their gender. The Stereotypes toward Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure Scale (SCADS) was developed as the data collection instrument, and expert opinions were obtained to ensure content validity. Criterion-related validity was examined using the Gender Equality Scale (GES). Construct validity was evaluated through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a single-factor structure with 24 items, which was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis, indicating good model fit (χ²/sd = 2.19; CFI = .98; TLI = .98; RMSEA = .049). The scale demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = .98). A positive, statistically significant, but low-level correlation was found between SCADS and GES scores (r = .215, p < .01), supporting criterion-related validity. Measurement invariance analyses across gender indicated invariance in factor loadings and item intercepts. Regarding known-groups validity, no significant difference was observed between participants who reported childhood sexual abuse experiences and those who did not, suggesting the need for additional evidence to support discriminant validity. Overall, the findings indicate that SCADS is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing adults’ stereotypes toward childhood sexual abuse disclosure in Türkiye. Generalizability of the findings is limited due to the use of convenience sampling.
