Abstract

This study examines how the Yaren Stork narrative circulating on social media produces a collective affective space. A total of 1,000 user comments posted under a reunion photograph shared on Instagram by wildlife photographer Alper Tüydeş, marking the 15th migration of Yaren, a stork that has gained public visibility through its annual reunions with fisherman Adem Yılmaz from Eskikaraağaç Village in Bursa during the spring migration period, were analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that emotion repertoires and discursive practices emerged as the dominant themes in user comments. The most frequently identified codes were compassion, platform-specific symbolic expressions, happiness, gratitude, and hospitality/welcoming rituals. An examination of code co-occurrences revealed that compassion most frequently co-occurred with platform-specific symbolic expressions. In contrast, anxiety was identified as the least frequently observed emotional category. One of the key findings of the study is the prominent use of metaphorical and symbolic forms of expression in the comments. This suggests that, within digital communication practices, users make sense of emotions not only through direct expressions but also through metaphors, symbols, and platform-specific signs. The findings demonstrate that digital publics function not only as spaces for information exchange but also as cultural arenas in which collective meaning-making and emotional sharing are constructed.
