Abstract
Mavlânâ Jalal al-Din Rumi’s (d. 1273) Masnavi-e Manavi has been the subject of numerous commentaries from the time of its composition to the present day, has inspired countless scholarly studies, and has profoundly influenced many poets and authors. One of the main reasons attributed to the exceptional importance of the Masnavi is that, through the themes it addresses, it appeals to people from all walks of life, encourages individuals toward goodness and righteousness, and fundamentally places the human being at its center. The Masnavi functions as a multifaceted guide, containing allegorical stories on all matters concerning human beings and conveying issues such as morality, wisdom, patience, love, self-discipline, and trust in Allah through symbols and analogies drawn from everyday life. In this study, the references to the scent of musk in Mavlana Jalal al-Din Rumi’s Masnavi is examined in terms of their mystical and literary functions. Within the scope of the research, all couplets in the Masnavi that refer to musk scent were surveyed, and it was determined that this term appears in thirty-eight couplets across thirty-four different contexts. These couplets were analyzed together with their Persian originals and Turkish translations. As a result, it has been observed that the scent of musk is employed not merely as a sensory element but as a multilayered metaphor representing mystical concepts such as truth, sincerity, spiritual maturity, divine attraction, and perfection. Through this image, Mavlana distinguishes between those who possess inner meaning and those who remain on the surface, between the seekers of truth and those enslaved by their carnal desires. Moreover, the frequent juxtaposition of the musk image with negatively connoted elements such as filth, donkeys, and animal dung serves to intensify meaning through contrast. In this respect, musk emerges as one of the fundamental metaphors in the Masnavi, fulfilling both symbolic and didactic functions by guiding the reader from the material to the spiritual, and from imitation to true realization.
Özet
Mevlânâ Celâleddin-i Rumî’nin (öl. 1273) Mesnevî-i Mânevî adlı eseri hiç şüphesiz tasavvuf edebiyatının en önemli eserlerindendir. Bu çalışmada, Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî’nin Mesnevî-i Manevî adlı eserinde misk kokusuna yapılan göndermeler tasavvufî ve edebî işlevleri bakımından incelenmiştir.
