Abstract

Since textbooks are one of the most common and frequently used materials in educational environments, they must have certain features at the end of a meticulous preparation process. One of them is that the readability of the textbooks is suitable for the student level. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the high school 9th grade geography textbook is suitable for the age level of the target students by evaluating it with readability formulas. The research is designed as a descriptive study based on document analysis. In the study, the readability levels of randomly selected texts from the 9th geography textbook, which was prepared in accordance with the updated curriculum (2017), and started to be implemented all over Turkey from 2017-2018 academic year, were measured. In the analysis of the texts, the Statistical Measurement of Gobbledygook (SMOG) readability formula and the Flesch readability formula adapted into Turkish by Ateşman (1997) were used. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that the findings obtained from both formulas were not consistent. Accordingly, the results obtained from the SMOG readability formula show that the textbook is higher than the reading age of the target audience students. According to the results obtained from the formula adapted by Ateşman, it was determined that the average readability level of the mentioned textbook was easy.

Analizler sonucunda her iki formülden elde edilen bulguların tutarlı olmadığı görülmüştür.
