Abstract

This study aims to develop a measurement tool to identify teachers’ curriculum adaptation practices. The research was designed using a descriptive survey model. The sample consisted of primary and secondary school teachers working in public schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in the central district and two counties of Balıkesir province. Theoretical foundations of curriculum adaptation were examined by reviewing national and international qualitative studies in the relevant literature. Within this scope, patterns of adaptation were defined, and an item pool was created. The item pool was then reviewed by experts, and a draft form was prepared and subjected to pilot testing. In the first pilot study (N=286), exploratory factor analysis revealed that the scale consisted of four components and 20 items. The components of the scale -omitting, adding, reordering, and creating- explain 51.972% of the total variance. In the second pilot study (N=590), confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model fit indices were at acceptable and good levels (χ²/df=405.595/143, RMSEA=.056, CFI=.927, TLI=.912, SRMR=.054). The reliability coefficients for the overall scale were α=.80 and ω=.82. These findings indicate that the developed scale is a valid and reliable tool for assessing teachers’ curriculum adaptation practices.
