Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine greenwashing practices within the scope of corporate sustainability reporting and to reveal how the financial performance of companies found to be engaging in greenwashing is affected by this process, using international examples. In recent years, increasing public awareness of environmental and sustainability issues has created growing pressure on businesses to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) elements into their business models and to publicly disclose their performance in these areas. However, the fact that ESG disclosures are largely voluntary, coupled with factors such as regulatory gaps, investor and customer expectations, and competitive pressure, can lead some businesses to make misleading sustainability claims that go beyond their actual performance. This study adopts a qualitative research approach and uses a multiple case study method based on secondary data sources. International businesses facing sanctions, lawsuits, or high compensation payments due to greenwashing are included in the sample. The dataset was created through content analysis of documents obtained from academic studies, regulatory decisions, company statements, sustainability reports, and reliable media sources. The findings show that greenwashing practices not only create reputational risks for businesses but can also lead to direct financial consequences such as financial penalties, loss of market value, and decreased investor confidence. The study highlights the importance of transparency, verifiability, and regulatory oversight in ESG reporting, offering implications for both the literature and the regulatory framework.
