Abstract

Aim: Our aim in this study is to discuss the need for routine histopathological examinations of tissue samples obtained during functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Method: For this study, the data of 248 patients who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery at Mersin University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Otorhinolaryngology between 2019 and 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: When the histopathological examination results were evaluated, benign diseases were detected in 183 (90.6%) patients, malignant diseases were detected in 10 (4.9%) patients, and malignant diseases were detected in 9 (4.5%) patients. Conclusion: Routine histopathological examination may not be necessary in patients with bilateral paranasal sinus polyps and allergy related diseases.
