Abstract

Aim: Turkey is frequently affected by earthquakes due to its geographical location. The sudden occurrence of earthquakes and the continuation of aftershocks make it difficult for survivors to return to their normal lives. The psychological effects of earthquakes on individuals have been addressed in previous studies. This study aimed to examine the relationship between attitudes towards earthquakes and psychological resilience among individuals who experienced the two major earthquakes that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023. Method: Thiscross-sectional study included 474 adult participants. Data were collected using the Descriptive Questionnaire Form, the Attitude Scale Towards Earthquake, and the Brief Resilience Scale. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Committee of a university before data collection began. Data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient, t-test for independent groups, Mann-Whitney U test, One-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and linear regression. Results: The results showed a weak but statistically significant positive correlation between attitudes towards earthquakes and both resilience scores and age. Statistically significant differences were found in earthquake attitude scores based on gender, being trapped under rubble, losing a loved one, and receiving psychiatric support after the earthquake (p<0.05). Additionally, resilience scores significantly differed according to educational level, family structure, and need for psychiatric support (p<0.05). A weak positive correlation was also found between attitudes towards earthquakes and psychological resilience (r=0.154, p=0.001). Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of using an earthquake attitude scale to explore the relationship between resilience and individuals affected by earthquakes. As earthquakes are traumatic experiences, participation in psychological resilience programs is essential. Psychological variables should be considered when evaluating attitudes towards earthquakes and planning post-disaster interventions.
