Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to examine the impact of sociodemographic factors and psychological resilience on well-being in individuals caring for oncology patients. Method: This study with a descriptive and cross-sectional design was conducted between 24 April 2023 and 15 July 2023 with 173 caregivers in the oncology ward of a university hospital in southern Türkiye. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Caregiver Well-being Scale and Resilience Scale for Adults. Statistical analyses were performed using the t-test for independent samples, one-way ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: In our study, the mean score for caregivers on the basic needs subscale was 56.37±20.98, on the life skills subscale was 58.29±21.14, and on the psychological resilience scale was 60.38±30.70. Regression analysis revealed that variables such as age, psychological resilience, life activities subscale, having children, employment status, good health of the caregiver and regular medication use of the caregiver increased the level of basic needs satisfaction, while low educational level and the presence of a chronic illness had a negative impact on this level (R²=0.890, p<0.001). In addition, a high level of fulfilment of basic needs had a positive effect on the dimension of vital activities, while young age and illiteracy had a negative effect (R²=0.829, p<0.001). Conclusion: Psychological resilience and supportive socio-demographic factors play a crucial role in improving caregivers' well-being. Supportive interventions, particularly for caregivers with low educational levels or chronic diseases, may improve caregiver well-being and consequently enhance the quality of oncology care.
