Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the in vivo effects of different concentrations of wood vinegar (2%, 4%, 6% and 8% (v/v)) on hazelnut leaves against powdery mildew (Erysiphe corylacearum), which causes crop losses in hazelnut producers crops. The experiment was conducted in a hazelnut orchard in Giresun Province using foliar spray applications. Disease severity on hazelnut leaves was calculated using the Townsend–Heuberger formula, and percent efficacy relative to the untreated control (68.12% disease severity) was determined using the Abbott formula. The 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% (v/v) concentrations showed efficacy rates of 42.12%, 45.40%, 49.00%, and 52.27%, respectively. One-way ANOVA showed that the 6% concentration was significantly more effective than the 2% treatment, while the 8% concentration was significantly higher than both the 2% and 4% treatments (P<0.05). These results indicate that wood vinegar reduces disease development and has potential for controlling powdery mildew in hazelnuts.
