Abstract

This study aims to explore the variations in digital game addiction tendencies among children aged 4-6 years and the parental mediation strategies employed before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study, conducted using a relational screening model, employed two different study groups: Pre-Pandemic-Study 1 and Pandemic-Study 2. The participants selected through a simple random sampling method comprised of parents of children aged 4-6 years who attend preschool education institutions in the city center of Denizli. Study 1 included 437 parents, and Study 2 included 496 parents. The data were obtained using three different data collection tools: the "Digital Game Addiction Tendency Scale (DOBE)," the "Digital Game Parental Mediation Strategies Scale (DOERS)", and the "Personal Information Form". The data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and hierarchical regression analysis. The findings indicated that the tendency for digital game addiction among children aged 4-6 years increased during the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period. Parents' scores for active, permissive, and digital directing parental mediation strategies increased during the pandemic. Furthermore, it was observed that children who spent more time in front of screens had increased digital game addiction tendencies. In addition to digital directing and permissive parental mediation strategies, the mother's employment status was also found to be significant in predicting children's addiction tendencies. The findings were discussed in relation to the literature; suggestions were presented to parents, teachers and researchers accordingly.
