Abstract

Distributed leadership refers to an approach that emphasizes shared decision-making and responsibility among members, as opposed to traditional models where leadership is concentrated in top management. In this model, leadership is implemented by more than one person and distributed throughout the organization. This study aimed to adapt the “Distributed Leadership Scale” developed by Jønsson et al. (2022) to Turkish and to conduct validity and reliability analyses. The scale consists of 13 items and 3 dimensions. Within the scope of the study, firstly the language validity of the original English version of the scale was established using the translation–back translation method. Subsequently, the Turkish version obtained was applied face-to-face to 321 healthcare professionals working in a private hospital operating in Istanbul. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted on the obtained research data to determine the structural validity of the scale; and internal consistency test was conducted to demonstrate its reliability. As a result of the EFA, 1 item was excluded from the analysis and, unlike the original scale, a 12-item and 2-dimensional structure explaining 70.5% of the total variance was revealed. In the next stage, it was determined that the goodness of fit indices reached with the CFA were within acceptable limits. The reliability of the Distributed Leadership Scale was determined to be at a high level with the calculated Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of 0.94. In this study, the conceptual framework of distributed leadership was explained and a valid and reliable Turkish version of the Distributed Leadership Scale was presented for use in healthcare professionals. It is thought that this study will not only provide a new scale adapted to Turkish for the leadership literature but also serve as a reference for future research on this subject.
