Abstract
Although the Gulf of Saros has been the subject of much scientific research to date, the historical topography of its northern shores in the context of the Middle Ages, especially during the Late Byzantine Period, has remained rather ambiguous. Moreover, the major fortified settlements in the region were not discussed in detail with an interdisciplinary approach, especially in terms of architectural history. The identity of the harbors, highly likely related to those fortifications, also remained unknown. In this study, first, the current arguments in the literature were discussed through their deficiencies and uncertainties. Then, three Byzantine fortifications located in the present-day villages of Yaylaköy, Mecidiye and Gökçetepe on the northern coast of the Gulf of Saros were compiled and classified based on the data available in the academic sources. Meanwhile, a summary review of Byzantine fortification architecture was added to the study as a guide for understanding and dating the structures in question. The main part of the research is the reexamination of primary sources, such as written and cartographic portolans, contemporary testimonies and archival documents in the light of field data and through comparisons. According to the findings, the present Yaylaköy Castle supposedly dates back mainly to the Middle Byzantine Period, approximately to the 9th-10th centuries. The present Mecidiye and Gökçetepe castles are presumably 13th century constructions. All those castles were seemingly abandoned by the 15th century. As of the Late Byzantine Period, there were Yaylaköy-Pacheia and Mecidiye-Xeros site matches. Those places also had harbors and were located on certain trade routes. Gökçetepe-Megarision was the last site match, where no harbor of commercial importance was identified in that region.
