Abstract
Transformations in the social structure have a profound impact on the values, traditions and cultures of societies, as well as on the distinctive structures, behaviours and attitudes of individuals. In consequence, the socio-cultural differences between generations have become increasingly evident. In this context, the present study was conducted with the objective of examining the marital expectations and attachment styles of the Y and Z generations. The study employed a survey model. A total of 1,054 individuals participated in the study, with 542 (51.4%) belonging to Generation Y and 512 (48.6%) belonging to Generation Z. Of the participants, 496 (47.1%) were male and 558 (52.9%) were female. The mean age of the participants was 23.62±3.58, with a range of 18 to 42 years. The study’s data was collected using a Demographic Information Form, Marriage Expectation Scale, and Three-Dimensional Attachment Styles Scale. Descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, the independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to analyse the data. The findings indicate that the most significant expectation of both Generation Y and Generation Z with regard to marriage is intimacy. Both generations exhibit an unrealistic and idealistic perception of marital expectations, as well as a secure attachment style. However, attachment styles differ according to the types of marital expectation.
