Abstract
This study examines the concept of actor presence through the lens of somatic practice, aiming to offer a theoretical response to the growing need for bodily expression in contemporary theatre. The central question is how Qigong, Skinner Releasing Technique, and somatic improvisation may function as pathways toward this state of presence. Drawing on a qualitative literature review, sources related to theatre theory, performance studies, and somatic practices are comparatively analyzed. The study explores the shifting position of the body in theatre history, theories of presence developed by Fischer-Lichte, Lehmann, and Phelan, and the training approaches of Grotowski, Brook, and Barba, before examining the three somatic methods in detail. The findings reveal that all three methods share strong conceptual connections with performance-based theories of presence. Qigong is identified as awakening and intensifying inner energy; Skinner Releasing Technique as dissolving bodily and mental patterns to cultivate permeability; and somatic based improvisation as channeling this energy into relational stage experience. It is proposed that these three methods may form a mutually reinforcing training matrix, and that their systematic integration into actor training could offer valuable contributions to both individual performer development and the field at large.
