Abstract

Business ethics - which stem from a business' economic, political, social and environmental responsibilities - cover such factors as working conditions, honesty, transparency and prevention of environmental pollution. Principles of business ethics pay dividends in determining and defining institutional values, offering solutions to employees' moral dilemmas, building trust in the workplace and developing a business's esteem. This paper aims to study the ethical principles of businesses that operate in Turkey and to reveal their notion of ethics. To this end, the official websites of the 500 largest businesses that were announced by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce in the year 2014 have been examined and the ethical principles of these companies investigated. The investigation revealed that 75 of these have determined and declared their ethical principles. The ethical principles of these 75 businesses have been evaluated using a content analysis method which consists of two categories and 54 entries. It has been observed that businesses in general have little regard for ethical principles, that they prefer to have their own custom ethical principles in addition to such standardized ones as those defined in Global Principles Agreement and in Institutional Management Principles and that some businesses - because they perceive ethical principles in a different way - perceive their institutional values as ethical principles. Businesses consider providing safe working conditions as their primary responsibility, pay importance to employees' enjoying harassment-free and equal conditions and expect them to refrain from doing things that would place themselves and the business in an awkward position. As for their responsibilities towards the society, they put emphasis on such subjects as operating in a manner that is not harmful to the environment, supporting the society socially and not to get involved in political activities.
