Abstract

TikTok is taken into consideration as a cultural phenomenon that attracts users’ attention with its short videos and reshapes the way they interact with its content, especially in an environment where social media platforms are constantly transforming. This article discusses the social semantic aspects of TikTok social media platform. In this context, the article tries to reveal how the platform can be addressed with a social semiotic analysis within the widely used communicative affordances provided by the TikTok user interface. TikTok, as a social media platform used only for sharing videos and live broadcasting, can be evaluated by using social semiotics as it offers users different interaction methods (comments, likes, virtual gifts, etc.). In other words, TikTok, which strategically injects cultural references, can be taken into consideration as a semiotic interaction centre that emerges from the interaction of shared symbols and codes. Through a social semiotic lens, TikTok offers a dynamic ecosystem in the complex interplay of signs, where creators and audiences form narratives that transcend time, culture, and emotion. Accordingly, TikTok appears to be one of the best social media resources for collective and visual or semantic inference.
