Abstract

Corporate social responsibility (CSR), which has been expanding its context over the last 60 years, is being questioned once again today after the awareness of the community and the understanding of what social and environmental problems that emerged the result of “social irresponsible” company activities are going to cost. CSR refers not only to voluntary donations or activities for the benefit of society, but also to integrate all the decisions and activities of enterprises with the concepts of employee rights, human rights, environmental awareness, biodiversity, corporate governance, and business ethics. While some companies make CSR a part of corporate culture and treat it as a strategic issue, unfortunately some companies can use it as an advertising tool to increase short-term sales by looking like a "good company". These different intentions behind social responsibility practices can lead to a skepticism of the CSR which is very important to all stakeholders and indispensable element of sustainable development. In this article, it was researched whether CSR is an advertising medium or whether it reflects a sense of social responsibility in a real sense. As a result of a comprehensive literature study, the historical development of the CSR concept is explained and emphasis is placed on its increasing importance. In the last part, it was tried to be explained with examples that CSR can not be used as an advertising tool to make profits in the short term, but on the contrary, it is a fact that is included in today's business basic strategies and is indispensable to ensure sustainability both in terms of business and society and the environment
