Abstract
In this study, the relationship between religion and commodity has been examined in the context of religious products circulating among large segments of society in Turkey. The aim was to explore the social and economic realities constructed by focusing on the religious products that are believed to shape the religious landscape. For this purpose, the relationship between religion and a set of objects was discussed with qualitative research method in the case of Ankara’s Hacı Bayram Bazaar; The Islamic products in circulation were descriptively evaluated in the axis of personal observations made in the bazaar and interviews with the bazaar tradesmen. In this context, it was observed that popular religion in Turkey reflects the orientation of large segments of the population to a set of religious commodities. The products circulating in the bazaar constitute a socio-economic reality that feeds both traditional and modern religious sensibilities as objects of material culture production. At the same time, religious objects subject to mass reproduction have the potential to represent the religious dimensions of the cultural industry.
