Abstract
THE influx of Arab Shici scholars from the region of Jabal cAmil in what is nowsouthern Lebanon to Safavid Iran (907-1135/1501-1722) and their important contributionsto Iranian cultural, religious, and political history have long been recognized.'According to the conventional view, the Safavid Shahs, upon the establishment of theEmpire and the adoption of Twelver Shicism as the state religion in Tabriz in 907/1501,imported large numbers of Arab Shici scholars from the areas of Bahrain and especiallyJabal cAmil to assist in the implementation of the new religious order. Concerning thisphenomenon, scholars of Safavid history have tended to speak in historical generalitiesbased on limited data. Some recent studies have begun to provide more specific details;yet despite the growing attention to the topic, fundamental disputes remain concerningthe causes and significance of the migration as well as the nature of the cAmili scholars'relationships to the Safavids and Safavid Shicism.
